First, research on what are the special items of that region or country. They could range from woven cloth, silk scarves, or miniature bottles. These special items should be your priority buys. Next, buy only what you can carry, which are usually small items. For example, resist the temptation to purchase that beautiful but heavy local wine barrel souvenir. Instead, get those miniature wine bottles that carry the iconic wine of that country. They are smaller and more convenient to carry.

Another guideline is to purchase only what you appreciate by trusting your judgment and instincts. For example, if you do not like the artwork of the piece, do not buy it just for the sake of having a souvenir. Finally, ask your travel agent what items are not allowed in your country or are restricted for export in the country you are visiting. For instance, if you are planning to take that expensive Japanese katana as a souvenir, think again. There are legal repercussions if Japanese authorities find out you are bringing one. The souvenir might be confiscated or worse, authorities may charge you of smuggling!
